Chashaku Wood Crafting Workshop
w/ Kent Ishimoto & Yoshitsugue Nagano

Saturday, June 27, 2026
12pm-4pm Community Event

Join us at Bloom Farm for a special community event: Chashaku (Tea Scoop) wood crafting workshop. The chashaku is one of the most essential tools in the art of making matcha. Throughout history, renowned tea masters such as Sen no Rikyū and Furuta Oribe have carved their own chashaku, using them as an expression of their personal aesthetics. Many of these hand-carved tea scoops remain preserved today, serving as a testament to their legacy. For this reason, the chashaku is often referred to as the “sword of the tea master.”

In this hands-on workshop, you will carve your very own chashaku from bent bamboo, experiencing the process of shaping a tool that will become an intimate part of your tea ritual. Once your tea scoop is complete and ready for use, you will give it a name—a single word that reflects the feeling of the moment, the current season, or a Zen phrase that resonates with you. This name will honor the spirit in which the chashaku was created and serve as a quiet reminder of your connection to the Way of Tea.

Reserve your spot in this pay what you wish workshop.

As a musician, Kent has composed musical pieces for visual installations that have been featured in multiple countries.  His most recent album mixes singer songwriting with tea ceremony.  Since developing these skills, Kent has done workshops infusing tea, Yoga movements + breathing, and music together to create a unique experience of art and connection.

    Yoshitsugu Nagano

    Japaneese Tea Ritual Master
Professor of the Ueda Soko school
Founder & General Director of Chanoyu Week NYC

Yoshitsugu Nagano is a master of chanoyu, the Japanese Way of Tea, and a professor of the Ueda Sōko Tradition of Warrior Tea, a samurai tea school with over 400 years of history in Hiroshima. He is the youngest person to be certified at the highest rank in the tradition. Since relocating to New York City in 2019, he has dedicated himself to sharing the philosophy, aesthetics, and spiritual depth of tea through public rituals, workshops, and lectures. His work emphasizes tea as more than a cultural practice—it is a path toward inner stillness, presence, and human connection. By preparing and sharing a single bowl of tea, strangers can sit together in harmony, momentarily transcending differences in background, belief, or language.

In 2022, he founded Chanoyu Week NYC, a city-wide celebration that introduces the essence of tea to modern urban life. Rooted in the values of coexistence, mindfulness, and beauty in simplicity, his mission is to offer tea not merely as a tradition, but as a means of restoring balance and cultivating peace in today’s complex world. He has conducted over 400 tea ceremonies and 500 lectures in the U.S., building a growing community around the quiet power of chanoyu.

Some additions were completed in 2007 and were constructed to blend seamlessly into the existing architecture. You may encounter some creaky floor boards during your stay – we consider this part of the charm of a historic farmhouse.
